Southern Fried Chicken 🍗

I love fried chicken 🐓 Especially when you take a bite and it has this amazing crunch, and a little bit of oil drips down your chin. Mmm, mmm, mmm! Since our move to the South, I’ve wanted to make this and I’m so glad that we did!

A few weeks ago we went to a country buffet in Valdosta called Mama June’s. They had the best fried chicken! I’ve never made fried chicken before (I know, what the heck!) and I wanted to try it out and see if my chicken could compare to theirs. I made a couple tweaks to a recipe I found, and this is the best homemade fried chicken I have ever had. My husband said that to me too! It really matters to me that he loves my cooking, and that all of our friends and family that come over love my cooking too. If there’s one thing I want to be great at, it’s making a delicious meal.

I hope you enjoy all the pics and steps, and the recipe too! Let me know if you make it 😋 I used our deep electric skillet to heat up the oil and cook the chicken and it was perfect. If you have a deep electric skillet, it’s the best because you can control the temp on it with the dial rather than having to guess with your stovetop. Or if you have a deep fryer, even better!

Spice mix
Spice mix mixed with buttermilk mix
The buttermilk mix I use, it’s a dry mix that you combine with water.
Placed thighs into gallon size bag
Poured in the spice and buttermilk mix, ready to brine for at least 4 hours.
Whisked together remaining spice mix with flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt. This will be for coating the chicken.
Coated chicken and placed into deep electric skillet with shortening heated to 400 degrees F.
Flipped the chicken over and then cooked for an additional 4 mins. Mine was a little crispy, but still tastes amazing. Next time I will do it for about 1 min less on the first side so it won’t get too crispy.
Baked in the oven for an additional 5 mins then served up with mashed potatoes and a side salad 😋
